For the first week and second week, I had learned about unit 1 in Critical Literacy. Thus, for the focus skills, I learned about Introduction to Critical Literacy. This is the first time I’m learning this subject. For me, this subject is interesting and tough. In the background readings it can be dividing by two which is Reading 1.2 and Reading 1.3. The topic in Reading 1.2 is Martin (1987) ‘Stories and facts’ and in Reading 1.3 is Fowler and Kress (1979) ‘Rules and Regulation’.
Every topic will be present by a group to share the information regarding to the schedule. In Reading 1.3, first group that comprise of Fidzah, Syusyu, Fat and Fifie had shared their information with friend. They did their presentation very well because I can easily understand what they want to say. In this topic, I know about the different between rules and regulations. Rules can be defined as an instruction that been given to behave according to desire. However, regulation can be defined as a rule or instruction that made according to official rules. After they finished their presentation, we have discussed about the topic with our lecturer and the information become clearer.
Subsequently, in practice texts I had read about Reading 1.1 ‘Convicted killer’ that shows about a nurse that killed her colleague but she’s innocent. Thus, she still can continue her work in English Hospital. After I read the article, I think that Deborah Parry is innocent because the article didn’t mention about how Deborah killed her colleague. The writer should not judge her with the words because we never know whether she is innocent or not. For the portfolio tasks, we have to write about Guided response to critical questions on ‘Convicted Killer’. On the first week, we have to write the draft about the article. Then, we have to submit to our lecturer. During the class, we have learned about how to mark our paper. We have exchange our essay with people in the class and give suitable marks for every subtopics. After mark the draft, I think I have made a lot of mistake and hope I can improve my essay.
